2022 03 17 Big Monks Black & White Mine with MelbaShed

This was a 5.5Km Medium walk from the edge of Banks, in Tuggeranong, ACT up the extremely steep ‘Banks Steep Track’ to the top of the ridge to Big Monks trig site as well as Little Monks and then down the westerly side to the Black & White Mine site. This was Melba Shed walk No 269 of 17th Mar 2022.

I led this walk with 2 of us having met at the Shed by 8AM & then driving in a car to to Orange Thorn Cres, St Banks. To reach the start point we drove south down the Tuggeranong Parkway & further south to near Lanyon Marketplace, then turned left onto Box Hill Ave at a big roundabout, then along it to turn left onto Tom Roberts Ave, then left onto Jane Sutherland St, then right at roundabout to Paperbark St, then first left Kettlewell Cres, then first left again onto Orange Thorn Cres, then drove along it for ~100m and turned left onto a side street to park. The short side street was quite steep, which was the theme for walk.

From 9.02AM we walked up the Banks Steep Trail, which starts as a bitumen road until it reaches the first major top after which it is a dirt track. As you walk up the trail. It is very very steep. However you get great views out to the north & west.

Its quite OK up on the top. Numerous kangaroos can be seen from near where you park right up to Big Monks. At the top we turned right at the first major intersection. If we had turned left we would have continued up to Mt Rob Roy. However we were only going to Big Monks & Little Monks.

We went through a gate & as we rose close to near the top we turned right i.e. north to head towards Big Monks which is a trig station. It has fantastic views. The spot can be seen from Banks below especially the large gum tree next to the trig station. We stopped at Big Monks for a short morning break.

From there we walked across a small field, to check out Little Monks spot which is marked by a Kurrajong Tree on its top. We then came back a little and walked down through open grassy fields, kept down by all the roos, until we could siddle around the hill to the west & find the Black & White Mine.

It ended up being 160m & bearing 240 deg true (ie south west) from Little Monks. Its about 50m in altitude below. The site is surrounded by a wire fence although parts of it have been breached. The site is quite uninspiring. There is a small sign advising who owned the mine.

We then went west from the mine site steeply downhill. It was largely open & grassy. Although the ground was quite grassy, there were numerous small rocks under the grass making the walk quite slippery. From the bottom we turned hard right & walked over easy grassy fields until we reached the edge of Banks & then walked back to the car along the easy Banks Track.

We reached the car around 11.40AM. The walk was 5.5Km in length, taking 2hrs 40min. It was a medium walk all up, but very hard over the first 2km.
