2022 03 31 Lake Tuggeranong & Oxley Hill with MelbaShed

This was an 8.4Km Easy-Medium walk around Lake Tuggeranong, ACT with a side trip up to Oxley Hill to its east to get a nice view over the Lake and the surroundings. This was Melba Shed walk No 270 of 31th Mar 2022.

I led this walk with 3 of us meeting at the Shed by 8AM & then driving in a car to Mortimer-Lewis Dr, Greenway, near the Sea Scouts Building, where we could park for free. The Lake and its surrounds including the Town Centre are all in the suburb of Greenway.

From 9.02AM we walked down the east side of the Lake to the Gathering Place, which is an artistic display using natural material to represent a meeting place like the original Ngunnawal inhabitants would have used. Of course in the days when the aborigines were the only humans around there was no lake and only a small creek, called Tuggeranong Ck. The Ck still exists further south beyond the lake as well as below the dam wall and down to where it joins the Murrumbidgee River no less.

Then we backtracked a little to walk through an underpass under Drakeford Dr into the suburb of Oxley. We walked up various lanes then along Schonell Cct until we could take an easy path up onto Oxley Hill (625m).

There were some good views west and south from the top. We then went down to the south on various paths until we passed under Erindale Dr then entered the suburb of Monash near Blakey Cl.

We then walked more south westerly on a path eventually passing under Drakeford Dr again, then crossing Lake Tuggeranong on a special walking bridge before turning north & following the path along the edge of the Lake.

We stopped at Maccas on the lakes edge for a break but got confused on ordering coffee & ice drinks/shakes on the Maccas standup ordering machine. I think they want you to use their app as the machine is so user unfriendly.

We then walked right around the rest of the lake along the path that very closely follows the lake shore reaching the car at around 11.43AM, taking 3hrs 3min, including 37m at Maccas. It was an Easy-Medium walk all up, with attractive views and a well kept and orderly lake foreshore.

There are a couple of small car parks on the lakes north western side as well as the one we parked in and one near the Gathering Place that are all free and untimed.
