2017 08 24 Mt Ainslie Quarries with MelbaShed

I led this walk, with 7 of us walking, from the Aust War Memorial (AWM) around the edge of Mt Ainslie Reserve, past the Canberra National Pistol Club, up the Lower Beacon Track, then down to footpads that took us to the Main Quarry, then another footpad up to the Kokoda Trail, down to the 2nd Quarry and finally back to the AWM for coffee at Poppy’s

7 walked. 5 of us met at the Shed by 8.30AM then drove in one vehicle to AWM underground carpark. We were met by 2 more who waited at the Weary Dunlop Memorial. Then from 9.10AM we walked easterly around the edge of the reserve, across Mt Ainslie Road & the Telecom Track near Campbell Park, then up the Lwr Beacon Tk crossing Mt Ainslie Rd again, then down a track along the edge of Mt Ainslie Road & then turned west to reach the main quarry. We then continued along old tramway route to climb up along a nice foot pad under a powerline & through a Shed-Oak Forest to reach the main Kokoda summit trail taking it down to Brigade Hill marker, then a sidetrack down to the 2nd quarry.

On the way to the lower quarry we stopped to view some bits of old concrete which clearly was old rubbish but which could be contrived as public art. Nearby were a couple of large circles of stones with the inside vegetation all burnt out. There were a large number of roos around here.

At the No2 or Lower Quarry we met two local ladies & one offered Wally some free rocks. We then finished back at Poppys Cafe for coffee at 12.05PM.

The walk included a couple of stiff climbs on the Lwr Beacon Tk & a footpad after the main quarry as we climbed back up the the main Kokoda ascent trail. They had asked for more strenuous walk.

The walk was Medium, distance was 8.6Km. We took 2 hrs 55mins
