20 April 2017 Mt Tennent with Melba Shed

I led this walk to Mt Tennant with 8 of us walking. We met at the Shed by 7.30AM & drove in 2 cars to the Namadgi Visitors Centre near Tharwa. From 8.25AM we headed up the track towards Mt Tennent which is 1384m high and a prominent  peak viewed from Tuggeranong. The weather today was superb & sunny. It a tough walk rising from 650m where we parked to the top, a climb of some 800m or so.

We reached the top about 11.20AM & had an early lunch there as well looking at the extensive views out to the east, clearly seeing the new Williamsdale Solar Farm, the Tinderrys to the east & Mt Bimberi, Split Rock & Mt Gingera to the west.

On the way up we passed 25 Outward Bound Walkers who had walked all the way from Adaminaby through Namadgi to Tharwa. We also passed several others groups doing the same walk.

Ian was ever present with his knowledge on the botanical names of various plants. He showed some of us the differences between the leaves of a eucalypt versus an acacia.

This was a Hard walk, mainly due to the overall height change as well as the pressure on knees & joints on the long & steep descent over a large number of steps. Length was 14.8Km, taking us around 6.5 hrs including breaks. We returned to the Visitor Centre by 3PM and enjoyed a cool drink from their kiosk.
