2022 05 26 Wamboin Trail Runs & Kowen Forest with MelbaShed

This was a 12.5Km walk around Forests near the border of the ACT Canberra Australia and nearby NSW. It was relatively simple although with issues on access and having some steep sections. The walk was mostly around Kowen Forest a large pine forest bordering NSW with the ACT

5 of us met at Melba Shed car park a little after 8AM & drove in two cars to Bingley Way, Wamboin.

From 9.22AM we walked up a Crown Road then along the Saddle Trail Run to reach the NSW/ACT border at a Calavetti. (Its a wooden horse jumping device which can also be used as a gate for horses & us humans)

Then we walked along a border track around some of Kowen Forest before turning to walk down Welch’s Road then down a couple of more forest tracks before we reached Pond 1 where we stopped for a short break.

We then walked on a couple of more tracks to reach Pond 2 from where we walked south around 400m over largely open ground to search for some old huts one of which was known as “The House That Jack Built”. We did find what looked like one hut site with some bare ground & various old concrete bricks strewn around near another pond, Pond 3.

We then went up another forest track before turning west, then north then west again before rising up onto the ridge that is the border, at a point where we could see a garden seat on the NSW property over the border as well as passing a stile that went into that property. We then continued along the track that ran next to the border once again passing a burnt out old Falcon that has been there for several years.

Reaching Poppet Hill we then spent a short period looking out south to see over Queanbyean, Googong, Fyshwick, Hume, Canberra Airport, etc.

We then went through a gap in the border & joined the Gold Rush Trail Run & followed it most of the way south to Saddle Trail Run. However some of the guys wanted to use a short cut so we walked across some open ground to then walk on a Pink Taped Bike trail that took us back to the spot where the Saddle Track & Crown Road all met. It was then an easy ramble down to the cars at the junction with Bingley Way, Wamboin around 2.06PM.

The walk was 12.5Km, taking 4hrs 44min. It was a Medium-Hard walk.  Views from Poppet Hill were great as usual giving us panoramic views south and south west over the Canberra and Queanbeyan areas.

On the way in we met one of the lady owners of an adjacent property. She told us about how they are holding various trail runs through Kowen Forest on Sun 19th June 2022 & how the money raised from the entry fees went to help the Wamboin Fire Brigade.  These trails runs can be entered through this link.
