2019 09 26 Gungaderra Ck Franklin with MelbaShed

This was a 6.0Km walk taking 2hrs 38 mins for a nice circular walk from near Harrison School, Harrison, Canberra, Australia along the corridor through Franklin suburb formed by the route of Gungaderra Creek, that has been altered to form around 10 or so ponds of which several are quite large. This was Melba Shed walk No 214.

I led this walk with 7 walking overall on a cool slightly windy spring day, with some sunshine and some cloud. It was a nice circular walk with some nice views over the Ponds of Franklin created by damming parts of Gungaderra Creek. This was a continuation of a recent walk around Harrison and also a section of Gungaderra Ck.

6 of us met at the Shed by 8.00AM & drove to a car park along Wimmera St, Harrison adjacent to the school.

Our driving route was along Ginninderra Dr, then up the Gungahlin Drive, right into Well Station Dr, then left into Hoskins St, then right into Oodgeroo Ave, then right into Nullarbor Ave, then over Tram Lines & left into Wimmera St.

At this location we eventually connected with Fitz our 7th walker at the parking spot at the north end of the school parking area. He had decided the Catholic school day care location was better!

We then walked west around 8.38AM under Flemington Rd & down Gungaderra Ck trails. After the first pond we headed up to Franklin Recreation Park which sits between the ponds and Mullanggari Nature Reserve to the NW. The guys enjoyed themselves trying out all the senior like exercise & enjoyment devices.

There was a large structure to the NE that attracted a lot of traffic while we were there. It happened to be the Franklin Early Childhood School.  It appears to cater for Preschool, K, 1-3 currently with plans to expand to Yr6.

We then returned back to Nullarbor Ave & took paths SW to the end of Patrick White Pond, the largest pond, & around its SW end & then back along the SE side of all the ponds until we could turn easterly to reach the Coffee Guru Cafe. Here we had the usual coffees, milk shakes & Greg tried a Spinach & Fetta roll. We then went back out & headed northerly down a nice laneway for 200m before we regained the Gungaderra Ck alignment & path with a short walk back to the cars where we finished at 11.17AM

We had started walking around 8.38AM & finished at 11.17AM but this included our coffee stop & some time waiting for Fitz & some playtime in the park.

This was an Easy walk of distance 6KM taking 2hrs 39mins.

Walkers: Bob Mann, Bob Salmond, Colin Fitzpatrick, John Edge, Neville Viney, Peter Coppin, Greg Hutchison | Drivers:  Fitz, Neville, Peter Coppin
