2018 03 01 ANU Sculpture Walk with MelbaShed

I led this walk, with 5 of us walking . We drove to parking spot next to the Civic Zone sub-station behind the CSIRO at Black Mountain on Frith Rd and then walked around the ANU looking at some of their fantastic public sculpture collection. This was a MelbaShed walk

5 walked. 4 of us met at the Shed by 8.00AM and drove to parking spot next to the Civic Zone sub-station behind the CSIRO at Black Mountain on Frith Rd where we met one more. We then walked down along the boundary between the ANBG & CSIRO exiting on Clunnies Ross St, near corner with Dickson Rd, then into the ANU walking approx anti-clockwise around it looking at some 25 sculpture & art pieces from its listed ANU sculpture walk & some not listed. There were some great pieces including a large statue of Winston Churchill, a bust of Winston also, a bust of Judith Wright, a new statue of Frank Fenner, and the fabulous large metallic ball UNA 2013 by Wolfgang Buttress.

We had planned to do more but after coffee we were hampered by rebuilding works that forced us to go right around the rebuilding area of the old Union Court & numerous other central buildings. It does seem like they are rebuilding the whole central core of the University with several large cranes and loads of excavations under way.

Finally running out of time we cut across Clunnies Ross near Burton & Garran Hall then up South Rd CSIRO & back to the cars. The walk was mostly flat although there was a mild uphill drag back to the car.

We were also hampered by hoards of younger students flooding around the central area. We should have appreciated the large numbers as it was the first week or so of the new year.

We stopped for coffee at The Gods Cafe @ Hedley Bull Bldg Garran Rd.
